Why is this so difficult for people to understand. I DO NOT WANT TO USE THE INTERNET TO MAKE CALLS. I just want to make calls via my computer over my landline. I want my landline connected to a modem (what model- nobody will tell me) and while I am working on my computer a pop up should come up and say 'So and So is calling'.
I look and decide toi either send to voice mail or answer. If I answer, I want to click an 'answer button' and begin speaking using my cmputer's mic and hear the response over my computer's speakers.
It seems pretty simple. Back in the days of win95 and dialup, I had this solution with a software called Cheyenne Bitware. It included bitfax for faxing, bitcom, and bitphone for the application you're looking for.
There was a softphone as part of the bitphone component and it could be used to make calls from the pc speakers and mic using the landline connected to the modem. The bitfax part was where the voicemail application was and allowed you to set up multiple voicemail boxes if desired. With the conversion to winXP the software continued to work.
Cheyenne software was purchased by computer associates and I don't know if they're still making bitware. I haven't gotten around to installing win7 yet, so not sure if it offers an XP compatibility mode, but if it does you might be able to get bitware to work on it. It's hard to find the whole suite online which makes me think it may have been abandoned, but here is a link that appears to have it. However I can't vouch for the safety or reliability of the spyfind site as I've never used it before. Perhaps searching the old software sites will turn up more results for you.
KISSplease, 6:27 น. While this is an interesting project, one I would like to know the eventual answer, I agree it is not a topic for GV Forums. KISSplease's task seems so simple yet complex.
Love the horse to a sedan analogy! KISSplease, I think you need to have a talk with a telephone service tech. What we used to call a 'Lineman' in the old days. Onetopic to discuss with said Lineman, is a really big hurdle you face. POTS lines are 24 volt and an amp or two. F-it up and you will roast your $1500 PC.
Don't believe me? Unplug your telephone handset and put the wire plug on your tongue. Mizjewels, 6:11 น. Once you decide on the modem, if it doesn't come with software that will do what you want, perhaps this will work: PC-to-Phone/Fax and Phone/Fax-to-PC Calls If you have ISDN (Integrated Services Digital Network) PC-Telephone turns your PC into a digital telephone and you can use it on the same manner as you use your regular phone now.
You can make and receive phone/fax calls to/from any regular phone/fax, either digital or analog. Use digits only when you dial regular phone/fax numbers from your ISDN connection. Espirtu, 12:51 น. I feel your frustration.i have been looking for an answer to the exact same question. For me the easiest way to explain this is: I am looking for software for Windows7 64 bit, that will allow me to answer my land line phone through my computer. I play alot of computer games and i miss the days when i would get a call and the caller id would flash on my screen, i would hit f8 and answer the call via my headset. This was a something that is in the Windows Engine since NT.
Its silly and its Old School but it was really nice. Don't get it confused i am not trying to Skype, I am not looking to use Vontage. I am just trying to multitask my computer and use it as a home phone. In my search for this solution i have realized that the key is in getting a modem with driver support, and nothing usb can be picked up by the programs so you will have to use the jacks on the back or front of your pc.
In the last month i have been able to dial out, and hear ppl talk just by using the the (dialer) program in windows, cmd line -dialer. You got the key pad and it will pick up the dial tone.now just have to get it to talk. So i feel your frustation.cause over 50 sites you get people saying the same thing. Its that generation they don't realize how power the P.C. Was as a general tool.
When i was college i had 25 mailbox voicemail.with my pc.just cuase i could. So don't give up there are more ppl working on a solution than you think. MrChris, 13:01 น. Ironically requires the internet. To download the required software.
BVRP Phone tools. It's like generic phone software shipped with nearly all pre 2000 computers.
If you don't have an old OEM disk that has it then I would suggest internet to download somewhere. I'm sure it's possible, I've downloaded an old Version of Picture me. That I liked. That was out before windows 98SE came out. Look it up or if that's too much email me.
Maybe I'll do it. Or just post on here. CLOUDS, 22:19 น. I remember those days too with win 95 and the PC was handy that way to use as a telephone. There is also Ooma that works like a land line but does require high speed internet. It simply is a hub connected to a PC/Mac to a landline or not but you don't need the actual computer on for it to work. Sound clarity is great, no real fees and you can keep your landline number (with teleporting charges) after you cancel POTS service.
This could be the best solution without getting a new modem and new software. It is costly intially but it pays off in the long run. Ve6ay, 16:12 น. To the angry person above asking how this relates to GV, how's this for a thought: GV forwards to any phoneline. Your POTS is a landline PHONE. Thus you forward GV to your landline and answer through your PC. As for other solutions to this, I honestly don't remember the software we used to use.
But it was with WinNT and we had a voicebox for each of the family, and it answered for us if we didn't answer after four rings of the phone. If I can ever remember what it was, I will gladly share. Wasabi gasp, 17:48 น. The is a completely reasonable request which as others have pointed out, was available as part of Win95 back in the days of dial-up voice/fax modems. There are still solutions available, although I haven’t installed any of them so I can’t vouch for them. The functions you’re looking for MIGHT be bundled with the USB modem you purchase, but there are also some shareware softphone products available.
Fortunately, these solution components aren’t very expensive, and the software bits are generally available with a free trial period. Win7 compatibility complicates the issue since it’s such a new product. So, I guess you’re stuck with a bit of trial and error.
As you’ve said, it seems like this should be very simpleand it used to be. I think the two most useful places to search for components are for software, and Amazon.com for modems. Modem brands include USRobotics, Zoom, Hayes and Lucent. Keep in mind that the modem has to be voice compatible.
Here are possible products to help you succeed: Softphone products: Classic Phone tools - Phone Plus 7.2.1 - CallStation - USB Modems: HiRO V.92 56K External USB Data Fax Voice Modem Windows 7 Vista XP 32 64 bit RoHS Comes with bundled communications software; Sewell USB Voice/Fax modem runa222, 8:13 น. Kiss - Forums on the internet have 5% good information provided by people who read and understand the question, and actually know something about the subject - and when they answer are not just doing so just to see themselves talk.
You need a voice modem that can display caller id. I recommend the Rosewill RNX-56USB, which is a hardware controller modem with the Conexant SmartDAA chipset. It has caller id support, V.92 modem on hold, and also comes with telephone answering machine software. It has Windows 7 plug and play support. Dbsmoker, 11:10 น.
You are going backwards in time actually. If I understand you correctly. A LONG TIME AGO.
There were ISA cards that you could buy with a modem and answering machine combination. When the phone rang it would answer after 4 rings and collect voice mail. Or you could answer the phone on your computer before that time.
That hardware is extinct to my knowledge. There are POTS line cards out there for PBX use.
But those are also on the extinction listing. Hope this helps. I'm an old timer. I bought one of those cards a long time ago. Gong9, 14:47 น. I remember something called CallWave.
It was software that you would use while you were using your dial-up internet, then if you got a call it would interrupt and let you answer or listen to a voicemail as it was being left. I think if you 'answered' though, you'd have to pick up your actual phone. Maybe you could answer using the mic on your computer, though. I don't remember exactly. Looks like it's still around: There were a few similar services, but many may be defunct now that dial-up is no longer in vogue.
Jaybrooks76, 11:30 น. So without having time to read through ALL of the replies to your question, I have read through few. What I've gathered is this: You don't want to get a service that will call you through your computer. You just want a program that will call you through your landline service, thereby leaving configurations essentially the same as they have been. As far as I know from experience (I'm only 20, but I have been using Windows since 2.0, when solitaire and dialer were about the coolest things ever), a modem with telephone input, and windows are all you need.
I don't have Windows 7, but I imagine it's got the same dialer windows has always had. Opening this program, in the past, has enabled both incoming and outgoing calls. I'm not 100% sure, but I definitely understand A. Not wanting VoIP and B. Not wanting to spend money for a service you're already paying for. This thread has been interesting to read.
It shows me the technical evolution we have gone through and how blurry the lines have become between technologies. Anyway, what KISS was really looking for is called CTI (Computer Telephony Integration). You can tell by this thread that CTI has been replaced by VoIP. There are still reasons to use CTI but typically not for home/residential or small business so I would be surprised if KISS can find any supported solutions ( I am sure older solutions still exists and would work just fine). ISDN was a 'savor' back in the day for flexible/powerful CTI, but that quickly became old school once the more flexible and powerful VoIP entered the game.
Hope this helps clarify things.even if this is a google voice forum. Vmuehe, 11:21 น. I agree wi i4573, CTI has been replaced by VOIP. Back in the 90's I created an app that does what KISSplease is looking for. It was a PC interface that used a modem to dial out from the PC and used the onboard speakers and mic in place of the telephone's equipment. (Ironically, the app was for a kiosk that allowed you to purchase BellSouth telephones.) You might still be able to cobble together a similar solution. But, as others have indicated, there isn't really a market for this thing so finding an off-the-shelf solution is difficult.
I know it's frustrating that an expensive computer can't easily do what a $20 phone can do. On the other hand, my Toyota Camry cannot make toast. But it gets me to work. Bobkoure, 18:49 น. There are SIP adapters that can handle both SIP/VOIP and PSTN out as well as SIP/VOIP in (so you'd use a SIP phone internally). The only one I know of is the Linksys/Cicso SPA3000 series, but I'm sure there are others. The idea is that your PC makes/receives calls as a SIP phone (or you can use a hardware SIP phone) - but that connection is only over your internal network (so no latency issues).
So you get what you want - answer incoming POTS calls on your PC. Outbound too (but you weren't asking for that) The point of the 3000s is for fail-over to POTS coming out of something like asterisk, but it'll give you what you want - listen to both game sounds plus incoming call (should work fine with direct sound although possibly with some fidelity loss to game sounds due to DS resampling). I don't think you'd be able to simultaneously use the same mike to both communicate in a game and to a voip app - but if someone figures that one out it's going to happen with a voip app - not with an obsolete voice modem app (just a matter of nobody using the latter).
All that said, you're totally missing the point of Google Voice - and doing it on a GV support forum. Sure this is the best place to be asking?
Marcos El Malo 1/1/2010, 3:30 น. Thank you all for your feedback. I have been skiing for the holidays and away from my computer. I have however purchased a voice modem and tried various trial software packages that have been suggested. VentaFax, CallClerk, PC2 Answering machine, ClassicPhoneTools and a few others. I have been able to get the callerID, answering machine part to work on a few but not the 'click on answer and start talking via PC mic and PC speakers'.
I have not given up and will most definitely give a full accounting once I get this to work. I feel your pain about people not answering the question you asked, that is, how to make your computer act like a phone. It has nothing to do with VOIP, I agree. It also would seem that it has nothing to do with Google Voice either. Why are you asking that question here? There are about a hundred people so far who are trying to outguess you (at no charge to you, I might add) and you are getting angry at them?
Look at it this way: if you called tech support and you were paying $3.95 per minute to ask your question, would you call Google? Or would you call someone who is an expert about using a PC as a speakerphone? Maybe a PC company? Maybe a speaker company? I hope this helps! Fezzik1977 6/1/2010, 9:40 น. Plug the phone line into your modem (assuming you have a dial up modem jack which on modern PC's is rare).
Plug in a Microphone, and a headphone, then open the start menu, All Programs, accessories, communications, Hyperterminal. I don't know why you would want to do this but I discovered back when I was connecting to the university computer over dialup that I could use Hyperterminal to make calls to phones as well. I used to have a program that allowed my computer to serve as an answering machine/fax machine back when dialup connections were still popular.
You might be able to find something like that and there might be an easier phone dialer app. Certainly there will be easier ones than Hyperterminal but it should work I think. DANNYSKY 6/1/2010, 13:37 น. Yes, with all of that input I'm sure you've found a solution. Go to a computer guy/gal, flea market, etc and pick up an old version of ACT.
I used to use it but you'd put all of your contacts into it and i would let you dial and pull up the caller info if they were in the ACT database. ACT contact manger. A lot of people don't understand because the thought is so foreign to them.
I bet most people don't even have a land line phone anymore. Hence all of the VIOP replies. I used to have an old IBM PC that had a software phone. I can't remember what the name was but that was back in 1995. Like I said go find some old computer person and they should be able to get you what you need. Most of that stuff probably will not work but do post if you find something.
Oaklandzev 7/1/2010, 9:51 น. I'm also interested in this. I use Dragon Naturally Speaking for voice to text to relieve my RSI issues, and when I get an incoming call I have to pull off my headset and switch to my phone headset. It would be great to just pause the Dragon software and answer the call on my PC, and have the further option (thanks to GV) to listen in on the voice mail should I choose not to answer the call. Further, when on a conference call I can mute the phone call and dictate notes on my PC, instead of having to type them. That further reduces my keyboarding and increased productivity. Please let me know what works!
Dsommars 7/1/2010, 16:54 น. As an oldtimer who started programming using a TTY and a acoustic coupled modem - you dialed the phone and put the handset into a speaker and microphone, I am curious about the solution.
POTS is still relevant. (1) It is a dedicated connection.
(2) There are places where none of the more modern solutions are viable. Places where you cannot get cell reception, there is no cable, and you are too far from the central station for DSL to function. Suppose you live in a city with a cell phone, work in an office, and vacation where POTS is the only option. Doesn't GV give you one number and then you don't have to tell anyone you are going to your mountain retreat? I wish people who have nothing positive to contribute would think for 60 seconds and not post unhelpful replies. Didn't Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak get their start selling a box that knew how to whistle the codes to get free long distance on AT&T?
Isn't that ironic? Rewjr 9/1/2010, 5:44 น. The answer to your question is probably not one you want to hear. But as I understand you, i see that you want pipe your landline into your computer and use a softphone (along with the microphone and speakers of your PC). The correct way to do this is to utilize VOIP technology, because this technology will convert the analog telephone signal into a digital. Because there is no satndard software and hardware combination available that will work on our current operating systems. However, this can be accomplished with three items: An FXO card, a windows based VOIP phone system, and a soft phone.
The FXO card basically fills the place of a modem and can be found for less than $20. The other two pieces of software can be found for free. The upside to using this method, is that you will have many new features on this line because you will be feeding it into a full telephone system. If you wish to learn more on how to set this up, you may go to my 'Technology Blog' at or our website is. These are the types of solutions that we are specialists in. So if you want help in setting this up we could remote into your system and do this for not a lot of money.
Sr Cynna Mankind 9/1/2010, 23:02 น. There were a lot of really cool answers here. I agree with the answer about Computer Telephony Interface. I have used this at some larger companies that I worked for. I got screen pops, hold, voicemail and call forwarding. There should be some answer by Googling (Googleing?) Computer Telephony Interface or CTI. I get what you are doing and it has nothing to do with VOIP (unless you consider sgloeb's answer).
It may be 2 rings and forward to VOIP. Ya don't know until you try it.
Having GV may be part of the answer. I just want to thank you all for about and hour of educational entertainment. Sorry, didn't mean to shout at the beginning there. Gretti 10/1/2010, 11:34 น. I do this currently on XP with Talkworks and a USR external USB voice/faxmodem. Fax sending with this app doesn't work on Vista/7 and probably not on x64, but I've had it receive on Vista, so there's a chance the phone functions would also work. You could try XP Mode, although any of the apps functions that use the printer driver will eventually bomb out, I assume.
But as long as you don't try sending a fax, it might be OK. Talkworks is still one of the most useful and best programs ever sold and it's a shame Symantec let it die. Canon drivers for mac download. Phoenixcryos 10/1/2010, 17:37 น.
KISS we see what you are trying to go for and you asked the easiest, of course everyone is going to say VOIP. Being that you must have your land-line, you want to convert your 'expensive' computer into a cheap secretary. Again using VOIP this is easy. The funny thing is 5-10 years ago there was a solution for your problem but not today. You can use google voice to forward calls from your land-line to your computer.
You can also use google voice to make phone calls. So technically that solution would fit you without having to buy a modem. Also I find it interesting when people say I am using my computer as a DVR TV DVD Player Radio etc. And then complain about the machines limitations. I can't think of any other device in the world that is so versitile. Wes Gray 12/1/2010, 13:11 น.
Just contributing to the thread, and beating the dead horse. In the old days a company called Zyxel started producing some of the first modems with DSP chips on them. These were the first ones to be also used with computers for Fax and voice. I do not recall what we used (software) at the time, but it could basically run the equivalent of a PBX at home, or simply one line, one voice mail box and one phone. Zyxel still makes modems, and also all kinds of networking and other equipment.
Knipknup 14/1/2010, 14:54 น. Here may be your answer: motorola sm56 speakerphone modem find one of these and use the software that can with it. There are caveats however: While a voice-modem might be perfectly sufficient for small and simple voicemail configurations, several drawbacks exist: Audio-Quality and stability of audio communications is rather poor with some voice-modems. Voice modems often have difficulty in determining when a line is hung up, resulting in the line being blocked and messages recorded until the maximum recording time has been reached. Sometimes recognition of DTMF tones does not work correctly and call transfer is not supported for voice-modems, since the Unimodem driver does not support call-transfer. ZXT 15/1/2010, 22:19 น.
This thread is totally interesting and has many applications. Most laptops have a modem included that most people never use. I immediately understood what KISS was trying to do as did, because I'm trying to do the same thing.
Some applications like fax are still looking for a dialtone even though the data will be transmitted via the internet. Also it would be nice to have an extra line to connect devices to since in my case all usb ports are used and usb extenders burn out if they are overloaded.
I need a usable analog port because I don't have a land line. I downloaded RelayFaxNet and installed it only to find out that I couldn't send any faxes because there was not dialtone. So I'm trying to make the fax modem act like an analog phone! Thanks for the sincere reply to KISS, it saved me a lot of search work. Bjorg 15/2/2010, 2:17 น. All of these programs provide automatically detect an incoming telephone call, display the caller ID on screen and determine if it is a fax or voice call.
If it is voice, then either a generic or specific message (depending on the caller ID) is played and a message is taken from the caller. The message is then sent to Outlook's inbox as an attachment. If the call is an incoming fax, it is captured and also sent to Outlook's inbox.
The bells's and whistles include automatic forwarding to another telephone number or external email address, pager alert, call screeing, etc, etc. Fax printer driver, message braodcasting and so on. I am just getting back to this post after a little hiatus (read work, kids, wife). I bought a voice modem and have downloaded a few trial software packages but none have done the trick. Some do messases but don't record, some do caller ID but freeze up when the call connects, etc.
I am going to review some of the above suggestions and hopefully find some love. Maybe the voice modem I got was inadaquate or the driver or the phone software - I don't know so I will not name names - but I will get back with results after I have diagnosed the issues. Please bear with me, I have a day job - but I will not relent. There are certain things Kiss will be able to do and certain other things she/he won't.
As long as she/he resists the idea of internet phones, I don't think the goal will be met. I mean, some entity somewhere has to do the switching and connecting to other phones. At this time, the choices are either phone companies, or internet phone services that will connect to phone company lines. Google voice isn't meant to be your connection, it is meant to give you a permanent number that will not change, even if you change all your other numbers. The alternative is to do all her communication via voice mail, and just hear what others have to say in /hisher inbox. But I'm not sure how outgoing calls would be done without an internet phone company.
I wouldn't have Vonage again, but I do have a MagicJack and do not regret it. I think the request is really ridiculous at this point.
Dirtclot 18/3/2010, 21:25 น. Oh my gosh everyone here is a genius, well I am not so here goes. This is my fist post and I understand that there maybe some rules about asking a question is anothers post but I'm just gonna hope that everyone has had to deal with a noob or two in the past and show patients. So I'm gonna also give full disclosure also, I'm a bad boy and want to record conversations on my phone. Yes I understand that it's immoral, illegal in a couple states and just flat out something my mom would smack me for. So with that said no one has to point out that I will be having many a meal with Lucifer after D-day.
I think he will like me, haha. So I have an iPhone, one of the new ones don't ask which one it is, and I think I have figured out a way to do this dirty deed with out putting crazy splitters, jack and cables on my phone. So I can group phone calls and i want to be able to call an online message service before a call or sneak one during to record the conversation. To start I tried Youmail. It worked but it has a 117 second limit on the messages. Yes being the dolt I am of course I didn't do a practice run and got caught but the phone call was to my X-wife. Almost bought myself a black eye on that one.
So at this point what I am asking all the smart people out there, is there a free Youmail-like service out there without a limit on message length? Also I need it to be a service that I can remove the audio greeting. I would like to be able to record verbal beatings my mother, X-wife and girlfriend give me over the phone. I have also been looking to see if I could get an online phone number that would go to my home computer and a simple answering program to pick up the call and record till I hang up with it.
My last idea was to use a digital answering machine on with my home phone that I could call and let it record. The longest I have found was a 50 minute limit on the recording. That answering machine was 30 bucks which would be perfect.
I saw some other ones that were unlimited but they wanted mega bucks for them and Karma for some crazy reason hasn't delt me a great hand in the wealth department hahahahaha. Ok thanks for your time and efforts. Anyone who helps I'm almost positive that ol' JC will give you a pass if not I will set a second plate setting for you hahaha. Tech-guy 22/3/2010, 18:55 น.
Tech-guy, it is amazing to me that nobody has figured out the answer. Lots of people want to steer you to other solutions but nobody has stepped up with a solution. Since my first post I have I have switched my POTS line to a verizon FIOS POTS line.
Still want the Touchsmart to show the caller, let my wife decide to answer the phone or not by looking at the screen and if not have the call answered by the computer. Still no love with a simple solution. Some day - I will not give up! Tunetwrc 8/1/2011, 9:50 น. KISSplease, I applaud your work! If they don't get it, they just don't get it. I have a significant hearing loss and my headphones on my portable landline phone just don't cut it anymore.
My wireless USB Headset has plenty of volume for the time being. Yes I use Skype for all outgoing landline calls, but when a client calls my landline, they don't use Skype, I would like to hear them period. I like many others will appreciate a good point in the right direction. Keep up the good work and let's hope there is a elegant solution! Divide42 18/3/2011, 20:13 น. I run Windows 7 64 bit, and I use a PCI Rosewill RNX-56AG modem card (based on the Agere LSI SV92PP chipset). I was able to place and receive phone calls with my modem, with working caller ID, using an application called 'Phone Dialer Pro'.
The only issue I had was that the modem drivers included with Windows, nor the drivers from Rosewill's website would install an instance of the 'Unimodem Full-Duplex Audio Device', which seems to be required in order for TAPI applications to offer voice functionality. The user interface in Phone Dialer Pro is ugly though, so I will be trying some of the other applications listed in this thread to see if I can find one I prefer more. Concerning voice modems, you will find that not all voice modems are created equal. There are half duplex, full duplex speakerphone, and true full duplex voice modems. My Rosewill modem is a true full duplex modem. Read more about voice modem types here: To those recommending dialer.exe, try launching it on Windows 7.
You will find that the old Windows XP dialer, which was written for Microsoft by Active Voice and included a wide range of functionality, is no longer included with Windows 7. The fax functionality from the old dialer has been replaced with Windows Fax and Scan. The dialer in Windows 7 will place an outgoing call sure, but it does not place the modem into voice mode (AT command AT+FCLASS=8 or AT#CLS=8).
It appears to be purely designed to dial a number only, after which you would pick up a desk phone to talk to the other party. I fiddled around with extracting a copy of the XP dialer from a Windows XP installation disc, but I was unable to register avtapi.dll with regsvr32, which is required by XP's dialer.exe to run. Regarding the earlier posts in this thread, I can understand KISSplease's frustration. He was not interested in a VOIP solution, and stated so repeatedly before he started 'yelling' in caps. 'OMG, CAPS, save my virgin eyes!!' Then you have the many Captains Obvious who just had to tell him for a second, third, or fourth time that he had posted in the wrong forum. A final note.
My home phone line actually is VOIP. However, it is through my cable company's cable modem, which has an integrated MTA. Unfortunately they do not currently offer any way to make calls from my PC, and I do not want to sign up for Google Voice, or Skype or any other phone service unless it were to replace my current home phone entirely. For personal and family reasons that will not be happening any time soon. Divide42 18/3/2011, 20:36 น.
I reread my post. Just a couple of clarifications: While Windows did not include a driver that worked, and Rosewill's website did not have one that would install the Unimodem Full Duplex Audio device, I did find a driver for my modem on another site that did install both the modem and it's audio device.
Regarding my home phone line, the service is identical to Comcast's 'XFinity Voice' or Time Warner Cable's 'Digital Phone'. I use standard phone hardware, which is connected to my modem through my house telephone wiring. Czydrm 20/3/2011, 16:19 น. I came here hoping to find some discussion on Google Voice. Too bad for me, but I'm glad KISS is getting the answers to his irrelevant (in this day and age) question.
One thing I will say on the subject regarding POTS vs VOIP on the computer, yeah POTS doesn't go out with the power, but unless you have a generator, your computer does, so when the power is lost, your fancy answering machine is now a fancy brick. In this day and age it makes absolutely no sense to do what you are trying to do, which is par for the course, since it makes no sense to ask the question you are asking here.
Everytime i use google maps i have to reset my modem, i use a mac and i have tried safari and firefox and the modem crashes in both browsers. One other thing, when i can actually use maps for a few seconds, there is large gray squares all over the map where it wont load, once again this happens in both browsers.

Like if you just got adsl2+ but you have an old modem then that might be the problem. This is a very strange problem and im sorry i cant help you further.
The grey squares couldbe a sign that a firewall is blocking the picture from being displayed. Like netgear, another modem/router brand, they have an internal firewall that stops certain stuff in. It could be you set a firewall to blocking all images or maybe it thinks that maps are unnapropriate. Try disabling all firewalls that you have. If the freezing just happens when google maps are used then im stumped. If its for other stuff aswell i would recommend you getting a new modem.
In case you scroll down on the map to Sydney airport, you will see a 747 beginning as much as the north - nonetheless flying over the runway. Its shadow is seen somewhat to the southwest even even though it additionally has that 'funky colored shadow' to its rear. It could be an artefact created by potential of the photographic technique. An thrilling question to ask the creators!
-additionally - in case you seem heavily on the different planes on the airport, the taxiing ones have have been given the funky shadow, however the table sure ones do no longer. In order to measure the performance of a network, you need at least two devices: one to send data and the other to receive it. When you’re connected to the Internet, this kind of transmission occurs constantly as your Mac, iPad, or iPhone communicates with the Web servers that host your favorite websites. Online speed tests like work well for testing your Internet connection's speed, but very few users have an Internet connection that can max out an internal home wired or wireless network.
If you’re interested in determining the full speed of your home network and, by extension, your router, you’ll need a server that can transmit and receive data faster than your Internet connection. For most users, this means using a PC or Mac on your home network as a server, and then testing the bandwidth between that server and another device also on your home network.
A great utility to test bandwidth between two devices is, a free tool that you install on at least two computers, designating one of them as the server and the second as the client. Iperf then sends data directly between the two computers, revealing the maximum speed of the wired or wireless network connecting them. Start with Homebrew Iperf natively runs as a command line utility in Terminal, and the best way to get it is via, the open source packet management system. If you don’t already have Homebrew, open Terminal and run the following command: ruby -e '$(curl -fsSL The Homebrew install script will go step-by-step, explaining what it’s doing and prompting you to continue. Just follow the instructions as they’re presented. Once Homebrew installation is complete, all you need to do to get Iperf is use the following command: brew install iperf3 The latest version of Iperf3 will be downloaded and installed automatically. This, of course, is just a small example of what Homebrew can do.
If you’re interested in learning more, check out the project’s and pages. You’ve just installed Iperf on one Mac, but you’ll need a second Mac to test your network. Go to (or otherwise obtain) a second Mac and repeat the steps above to install Homebrew and Iperf.
Next: Using Iperf Using Iperf Note: for these steps you’ll need Homebrew and Iperf installed,. Also, you'll need to move back and forth between your two Macs.
You can either move between them physically (much easier if at least one of them is a laptop that you can bring with you to the other Mac) or access one of the Macs remotely via. Head to your first Mac and designate it as a server by entering the following command in Terminal. When prompted by OS X, allow Iperf to accept incoming network connections.
Iperf3 -s This Mac is now listening for an incoming client with which to test. Now designate the second Mac a client by using this command in Terminal: iperf3 -c IP Address of first Mac Iperf will run for 10 seconds by default and generate output on the client reporting the bandwidth of your connection in megabits per second for each second of the test, with the average for the entire test at the bottom. Remember, mega bits are different from mega bytes; 1 megabyte (MB) is equal to 8 megabits (Mb). Our first test, illustrated in the screenshot above, was conducted via two Macs connected to the same 802.11ac wireless network. This gives us valuable data on the connection between these two Macs. If you’re trying to measure the performance of your wireless router, however, such as, you’ll want to connect the Mac acting as your Iperf server to your router via wired gigabit Ethernet.
The reason for this change in configuration is to limit the variables during the test. If both Macs are connected wirelessly, and you’re only interested in the performance of your router or your client Mac, then the wireless connection between the server and your router introduces limitations in the overall bandwidth that make the evaluation of your client unreliable. By connecting the Iperf server directly to the router via gigabit Ethernet, you ensure that the signal from your server to the router arrives at the best possible speed, producing test results that measure the performance of just that wireless hop from the router to the client.
Note, however, that this only works because real-world 802.11ac speeds are still less than 1 gigabit per second. If future wireless technologies take real-world performance beyond the gigabit barrier, then the wired connection would act as the bottleneck, requiring another form of direct connection, such as or Thunderbolt. To illustrate the effect of a wired connection for your Iperf server, we ran the same test again, with gigabit Ethernet connecting our server Mac to the router. With all components in the same locations, the performance jumps significantly in the second test. This gives us a true evaluation of the speed of our wireless network as it pertains to our specific router and the location of our Iperf client Mac.
When you’re done testing, just hit Control-C in the Terminal window of the Iperf server to terminate the utility. If desired, you can run further tests in the opposite direction by running the server command on your client Mac and the client command on your server.
While the default test is sufficient for basic testing of your home network, Iperf offers a number of advanced options, such as changing the testing time or running multiple streams at once. You can view the options and descriptions via Iperf’s manual, which can be accessed by typing man iperf3 in Terminal. In addition to testing the performance of your home network, Iperf can also help reveal wireless dead spots in your home and guide you in finding the optimal location in which to place your router. Just run Iperf client on a MacBook and wander around your home, testing various speeds at different locations. Image Credit: Although Iperf’s command line interface is relatively easy to use, there’s also an. Note, however, that this version is currently running Iperf 2, while the method described above uses Iperf 3. Both will provide basic network testing, but they can’t be used together (i.e., Iperf 2 GUI as a server and Iperf 3 command line as a client).
Therefore, make sure you’re consistent with your Iperf version when installing it on your Macs. Finally, this article focused on Macs and OS X (this is The Mac Observer, after all). But Iperf can also be run via and (and even on ). As mentioned above, just make sure you’re using the same version on all computers if testing in a mixed-platform environment. Teaser graphic via.
You want to look for malware with something like malwarebytes but if you can not get the internet it is going to be tough. Try to ping some of the other sites from a command prompt. Some sites do not respond but the main thing is that is looks the site up. You can also try the nslookup command see what you get for nslookup tomshardware.com then try nslookup tomshardware.com 8.8.8.8 The second is using google dns. If these have trouble I would be looking for firewall rules blocking you or maybe some bad stuff in the host file. You can just delete the host file exactly where it is kept varies a bit on windows release but it is just a file called hosts generally in the main system path in a directory that has a name etc. If the DNS resolves correctly then I would be checking browser settings.maybe proxy or something.
My internet is connected and works. No web pages work except Google YouTube facebook. Steam doesn't work either I can only chat my friends on steam. I reset my router I've tried netsh ipv4 commands tried dnsflush commands, my ipv4 and 6 settings are on automatic. Please help I can't fix my internet! Follow these steps to troubleshoot the problem: 1) Reset your TCP-IP stack from command Prompt 2) Make sure your DNS servers are correct 3) Make sure your hosts file is not altered in a bad way. 4) If you have Avast Antivirus, Disable the web shield and try again.
If this is the cause, uninstall the webshield or perhaps try to remove port 80 from the redirect list under 'Troubleshooting' in Avast settings 5) if still not working, reboot to safe mode with networking and try again. If it works here, run msconfig and disable all services except microsoft services and also all startup items. Reboot to normal windows, and try again. If it works now, check if your antivirus is running with the altered settings of msconfig. If your antivirus is not running (some can be disabled by msconfig but others refuse) turn your antivirus back on and reboot.
Now all your startup items is dasabled except the antivirus. 6) If it works in this state, we know the antivirus is causing the problem. I suggest uninstalling your antivirus, and re-enable the disabled items in msconfig. Reboot and test without antivirus installed. If it is working, you could try to reinstall your antivirus and check if it is still working. My problem was the Avast Web shield.
I came across this thread, because I was having the same problem after a fresh installation of Windows 7 64-bit. I was worried because IPv6 had no connection (that's not the problem) and then that my DNS had no suffix (not the problem either). I tried EVERYTHING I found in forums including dnsflush and custom DNS servers, but nothing worked. I then saw one mention of someone having installed 32-bit drivers and not 64-bit drivers. I tried 64-bit drivers and this completely solved my problem. It's weird how something like that would be able to do this, but that's how I solved my problem 100%.
I had the same problem. I just solved the problem.
It has to do with IPv4 and IPv6 protocols Internet connectivity. Most likely your network adapter does not have Internet connectivity for IPv4. Google has an IPv6 address, so you are able to connect. The most other sites have IPv4 addresses. To resolve your problem, try the following in Windows 7: Control Panel Network and Internet Network Sharing Center Change Adapter Settings Double Click on your adapter, either Local Area Connection or Wireless Network Connection as the case may be.
You probably will see: Internet only in IPv6 Connectivity Click on Disable button Your adapter will be disabled Again double click on your adapter Your adapter will be enabled and this time it will show Internet Connectivity in both IPv4 and IPv6. Now, you should be able to access all websites. My internet is connected and works. No web pages work except Google YouTube facebook.

Hi, I have the same issue as you yesterday. And I resolved it today.
It was the default getway with no key in 192.168.0.1 Open Network and Sharing Center Connections: Wireless network connection Property Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) key in your default getway ENJOY SURFING! Hello, this problem has been bugging me for some days now and i fixed it in short by uninstalling my network driver. My problem was caused by automatically letting it configure my router settings. When it searched for available networks after the reinstall i noticed wiifree network was highlighted.
So i guess he most have connected to the wiifree net instead of the normal network SSID when it configured automatically. It makes sense now and i hope it helps anyone with this same frustrating problem! I had similar issue. Please check your wi-fi router's MTU setting. Router Admin page Network WAN Advanced MTU Size (in bytes). This could be different for your router I hooked up my new router TP-LINK TL-WR841N to broadband (BSNL).
Internet access was working great in 1. One of my laptops with Windows 8.1 OS 2. My Android mobile (Redmi 1S) But I was facing this peculiar issue of only Google, YouTube (IPv6) sites opening while all other sites (IPv4) not opening in 1. One Windows 7 laptop 2.
Nokia Lumia 520 After trying every solution suggested in this forum, I finally hit one site, that suggested changing the MTU in router. My router's default MTU setting was 1480, which I changed to 1430. The issue is resolved. After days of struggling with this issue, I finally found the trivial culprit! Windows Firewall settings! Issue explanation: At unpredictable times, my internet connection simply stopped working for domains that were not google related!
- After reboot the internet connection worked normally again. But sooner or later, the issue started again until next reboot. It was no DNS problem as neither urls nor ip addresses (except for google ones) worked!
Solution: Go to Control Panel - System and Security - Windows Firewall If it says that Windows Firewall is not running with recommended settings, then be happy! Your problem is the same as mine! Simply click Use Recommended Settings and you are good to go. Internet will work as it should. But the problem could happen again from time to time. For no apparent reason, my Window Firewall settings revert back to the Not Recommended ones and bum!

Only Google sites again! Of course you could do the above again to fix it. But who is causing this problem in the first place? I started having the issue approximately when I changed my antivirus software (removing Avira and installing Kaspersky), so I guess there is some sort of remaining Firewall editing software remaining from Avira but I'm not sure yet.

For me, changing the DNS to Google DNS solved the problem.
Google DNS is 8.8.8.8 or 8.8.4.4. You can change DNS number in the modem/router settings or your own device on which you are connected to internet. If its your own modem/router better change it there. If it is public network where you don't have access to modem/router settings, you can change the DNS in your device for that particular connection. The Windows Fiewall was NOT enabled. I enabled it, then accessed the same page I've been trying to load after each test. This time it came up - along with this forum page:P.

The issue is resolved. I looked up tomhardware.com fine, but with Google DNS 8.8.8.8 it timed out Looks like there are multiple potential causes of this issue. The cause I found in my situation isn't documented in the thread yet, so I'm adding it here. In troubleshooting a router via phone with Netgear, at some point they had me change my computer to a static IP address - in this case 192.168.1.20. After moving on through lots of other issues (including bricking the router when following the tech reps instructions, replacement coming on them), I completely forgot about this changed setting. Just as you noted above, I could get to Google sites including YouTube, and to Facebook, but not to other websites.
And like you, I could nslookup tomshardware.com, but not nslookup tomshardware.com 8.8.8.8. As soon as I changed back to a dynamically allocated IP for my imac, all my problems went away.

I just figured mine out after reading everything on this list and none of them being the solution. It seems to be that all sorts of thing can cause it, BUT the key seems to always be that something with IPV4 routing is messed up while IPV6 is fine.
So websites that are already converted to IPV6 become the only ones that work. In my case, my Netgear router, which I will never buy again after having two in a row that started having intermittent weird issues after about 9 months, had somehow assigned my laptop some random IP on another subnet and a 255.255.0.0 mask. Internally I should be on a 255.255.255.0.
I had glanced at it and not noticed until I saw someone on here mention that by looking at the adapter properties, you could see IPV6 connected to the internet but IPV4 not connected. Sure enough it was. Usually if the adapter's settings are on DHCP, there's no reason to check the internal IP if the rest of the wireless goodies in the house are working. I looked in my router and I saw several lines in the UpNP settings that were my laptop and the IP address was the same as what the laptop was. I turned off UpNP cleared the tables and almost immediately I had a proper IP address and all was working again.
So here's a guess and someone can tell me if they think I'm way off base here. Prior to this happening my laptop had run a Windows update. I had to leave and immediately went to work. At work I have an alternate static IP setup so I can be on their network. So I had no reason to suspect a problem.
But I think something in the update made the laptop a UpNP device and then that was recorded and setup in the router. Once setup, even when I uninstalled the adapter, installed new fresh drivers from Intel, the router was just pushing it back out to the laptop. This would be another one of this impossible to prove weird settings changes on updates things that Win10 seems to do intermittently to just enough people to be deniable. I've had enough such issues that the only reason I didn't suspect it this time was because I left after the update and didn't come back to my normal IP connection for several hours. I even did a system restore to roll back before the update and it didn't fix it. This is all a guess. I don't know a lot about UPNP but from what I've just read it seems that a UPNP device will assign itself an IP address if it doesn't get one from the connection point (router?).
Then it advertises it and is picked up by the router. Then in subsequent connections it's supposed to use that same IP address so I can see the router working in that way if it's the case. So anyways, WEIRD stuff, but fixed. This one baffled me so I wanted to post it here with the rest of the solutions so the next person has yet another possibly solution to the problem. By the way, I was trying all sorts of sites to see if there was anything common I could nail down. Suddenly I'm amazed at the number of people who haven't converted to IPv6.
If all the above suggestions don't work, you can try the below as it worked for me. The below will fix the issue only if you have a problem with you proxy server. In chrome, 1. Go to Settings Advanced settings change proxy settings. Click on LAN settings. Make sure you deselect the check box which says 'Use a proxy server for your LAN'. This at least worked for me.
Also one more suggestion, try troubleshooting your issue with the windows troublshooter. It may not help you to solve the issue but at least give you the exact cause of the problem. I made an account just to respond to this after 4 hours of staying up in the middle of the night stressed over troubleshooting. While I was doing all this I was to the point I was about to revert back to Windows 7 from Windows 10, I instead tried one more thing suggested by windows and I checked for updates and I was missing one. I installed it and everything was up and fine. If it is missing an update it may start working perfectly fine (at least for me).
WINDOWS 10 FIX POSSIBILITY. Go to PC Settings Update & Security Check For Updates. My internet is connected and works. No web pages work except Google YouTube facebook.

Works great thanks. This might not work for everybody because looks like the problem can be caused by many things. I wanna share mine because I tried everything listed above. I tried checking IPv4 in the router settings, making my IP dynamic and automatic, flusing DNS, or using google DNS, even trying to turn off firewall. What I do is actually unchecking proxy server 'use a proxy server for your LAN' located on 'LAN settings' inside 'internet properties' under the tab 'connections'. I hope my answer can help some people still struggling with it.
Guys, i wasted two hours in the middle of the night. I tried almost everything mentioned over here. But my problem was not solved. At last i found solution & would like to share with everyone. I believe it might help u guys in future. Control Panel - Network & Internet - Network & Sharing Center - Change Adapter Setting - Double Click on your active Wireless Network Connection Then Wireless Network Connection Status will pop up- Click on Properties Within the list, There is 'Network Filter Driver' - Remove (Uncheck) the check box Then Double Click on Internet Protocol version 4 (IPv4) - Select Obtain an IP Address & DNS Server address automatically. So had been searching for a solution to this for a whole day and found something that finally worked. Hopefully this helps someone else out. What I did was go to my LAN network adapter properties, uncheck both ipv4 and ipv6, then disable the network adapter. Then I re enabled the adapter, and checked ONLY ONE of either ipv4 or ipv6. For me, checking only ipv4 made my internet work again, although you may have to repeat and try the other protocol. By the way, all settings were on automatic. My internet is connected and works.

Open 'Windows Settings', then click 'Network & Internet'. Next click on 'Change adapter options' and a new window should open that shows how you are connected to the internet. (For example mine says 'Ethernet'). Double click the icon and it should open another window.
Next click on properties and locate the check box called 'Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)'. Select it and click the 'Properties' button. 'Obtain DNS server address automatically' should be checked when you open it. Go ahead and uncheck it by selecting 'Use the following DNS server addresses'.
Enter the following: Preferred DNS server: 8. 8 Alternate DNS server: 8. 4 Then just hit 'OK' and close all the windows. All web pages should be working now. If not try restarting your computer. This worked for me without restarting but I have heard of cases where users needed to restarts their computers in order for it to work.
(FYI: I am running windows 10 on the latest version of chrome) Hope this helps!

So i had a similar problem and was just able to fix it.
This helped me to fix the issue after spending so much of days looking for solution to fix my wireless issue with Windows 10.
I just wanted to share the solution with others!
